Artianne has completed the stunning mural on our station building. It definitely captures everything thatβs fab about our wee area of the park and, of course, oor wee train Hopefully it gives you something more to smile about when you visit Scotlandβs oldest miniature railway Iβm seeing a selfie ops everywhere
On Monday 23rd of August, we lit the first fire in Eva’s new boiler after eight months plus of strip down and rebuilding. The stationary Steam test was very successful with all major components doing what they should. Some small tweaks are required that could not be seen until steam was raised in the locomotive. It is planned to finish these minor items this week.
Then return her to the park to be steam tested again, on the move this time and hopefully return to service during the later part of September.
A HUGE THANK YOU to the team of engineers who have overcome all the difficulties that were thrown at them – from Covid restrictions to design alterations – while fitting multiple new components and pipe work. Well done Mike, Eric and Gordon as main leads on this work and also thanks to Jay and David W. plus many more who have contributed to this major piece of work.
“What is next ?” I hear you say, well we have a list of items that we wish to complete, on the rolling stock, locos and running infrastructure, this year and next. If you have an interest and would like to join us on a Monday or Tuesday evening please come along and join us.
Where the heck did that widget go ?Tea break after successful endeavours
You will all probably remember that at the start of 2020 we were preparing Eva for a running day when we discovered issues with the boiler and had to withdraw the loco for service. Since then we have been working hard behind the scenes to bring her ‘back to life’.
Work has progressed but it has been long and not without its difficulties however now we are on the last leg with our installation of the new boiler and many new fittings to Eva. If all goes well with these final bits and pieces it is hoped to complete a steam test in our workshop yard by the end of the month. Her tender has been cleaned and prepared for painting and we intend that by the end of this month it will be repainted to match the loco. Thereafter Eva will initially return to the park for running trials and when these are all successful we will be able to return her into full service.
Attached are some pictures of Eva in the workshop looking more like a locomotive than a jumble of disconnected pieces.
This is trickier work than it looks from these photos !
A huge thank you to our dedicated engineers Eric, Mike, Jay and Gordon who have been the key players in this restoration. Thank you also to the others who have assisted in this task.
New for 2021 – pin badges depicting most of our locomotives will be on sale at the park celebrating the fact that we are the Oldest Miniature Railway in Scotland Badges depicting Margaret, Eva, Abberton, Strathaven Castle and the new Class 67 will be on sale priced Β£1.00 for two badges See images below. We are hoping that the weather will be kind to us over the weekend and we look forward to seeing you all at the park and having a ride on the “Wee Train” If we have enough volunteers it is hoped to have Margaret in steam hauling passengers over one or two of these days.
Who is your favourite Loco ? I guess ours will always be Margaret
Work progresses steadily on the installation and rebuild of EVA. Several head scratching moments have occurred as the new boiler is not identical to the original and some minor fettling has had to take place to get parts to fit. Boiler now installed in frames and the smoke box and chimney are also back on the loco. She is starting to look more like an engine than a lot of bits.
If you are interested in this kind of project why not join us on a Monday 10am to 16.00 hrs or a Tuesday night 18.30 to 21.30.
