Thank you to all who visited the railway at the weekend. We all enjoyed the amazingly good weather 🌞 and the trains ran on both days with full coaches on most journeys. THANK YOU 🙏 for giving us a great start to the new season. Below are a couple of pictures of the first passengers on the new carriages.
On Monday we held a driver awareness day with several of our juniors in attendance. A good day was had by all thank you to the parents who started with us while the juniors had fun on different locomotives.
Almost time for the new season to start, at a slightly earlier date than initially thought.
We are all ready for the season and are ready to welcome old and new supporters of the miniature railway this weekend. Running both days from 11.00 through to 16.30 weather permitting.
We were contacted by the Daily Record, Lanarkshire Live and the EK News. They have just published the following article online – see the link below, next week it will be in hardcopy in the EK News.
Only ONE week to go before we start our new season !
This Saturday coming, the 29th March, at 11.00 am weather permitting our first trains of the year will be ready to take passengers birling around our track again.
We previously intimated that we will have a BIG SURPRISE to start the season.
And here it is, we have been working all winter in preparing a set of six new carriages ready for next weekend.
See below the pictures of the new carriages which have all been fitted with new airbrake systems to make them compatible with our locomotives. These carriages were supplied by Abbots Model Engineering and then we did all the conversions to our specifications.
Looking forward to seeing you all at the park next week.
We have been busy maintaining the rolling stock and locomotives ready for the start of the new season at the end of this month. Still several pieces of work to be completed from our winter maintenance list but all going well we will start back on the 29th of March.
We will have a surprise to share with all our followers and new visitors alike very shortly.
Looking forward to seeing you all back at the park in the near future
During the summer we were asked by the BBC children’s section if we could assist with close up shots of a steam loco 🚂 as they were making a new film called the (Primrose Railway Children).
We assisted with this at several locations, in Glasgow studios and at St Fillans for an outdoor shoot.
The programme has now been released 👀 and is available on the IPlayer and will also be shown on BBC1 during the holidays.
We must have been involved with over five hours of filming 📹 but it looks like most if it has ended up on the cutting floor. If you know what you are looking 👀 for you will see Cairhill dressed up as the BoNess for close up work. All Cairnhill’s brass work was blackened to make it look more like the real loco used.
A big thank you 🙏 to Jay who did all the preliminary work.
Link to the BBC site or look it up on the iplayer.
We have now finished our season for 2024 with the last trains running on Guy Fawkes night 🎇🎆 which again was a very successful night for all. Thank you to the volunteers who ran the railway on the night.
This has been a special year with the railway celebration 75 years in the park, and 50 years of the model society maintaining and operating the railway over all these years.
We wish to thank 🙏 everyone who has supported the railway this year, in so many different ways, especially those who have made generous donations to our funds which helps us to maintain and run the railway.
Also thank you 🙌🏻 to all the volunteers who give up their time to run the Railway not only this year but over many years of service to the society. We will now commence the winter maintenance programme ready for next season.
Then we will be ready for the new season commencing the 5th of April 2025.
Strathaven Miniature Railway will be running on Saturday the 2nd of November. This will take place around 5pm till 9pm depending on the weather on the night. This is our last outing for the railway in 2024.
The Strathaven Round table will be putting on their annual Bonfire and Firework display on the night.
A big thank you to all the club members and our visitors over the two days of our open track weekend (12th and 13th of October).
A good time 😁 was had by all even when the weather was against us on Saturday 🌦️. Plenty of banter, good food 🍴 and the occasional steam engine running on our tracks made up for that though, especially as the Sunday turned out grand 🌞. We must thank the Tudor Coffee House https://www.tudorcoffeehouse.co.uk/ for providing and serving all the food for lunch at the sports pavilion. Great feedback from all who attended the weekend regards the catering 🙌🏻. Angus provided filled rolls 😋 on both days for the early arrivals at the park and was much appreciated by all 🙏.
Thank you to all who provided photographs 📷 of the weekend, special mention to Ruth Allan, the photographer who took many of the pictures below, and Neil Arlott who took the drone footage 📹 on visible on our FB page https://www.facebook.com/reel/781648574027476.
Our last running day of this season will be the Guy Fawkes night 🎆on the 2nd of November along with the Firework display put on by the Rotary of Strathaven.
The miniature railway will be holding its annual Open Track weekend Sat 12th/ Sun 13th October.
We have invited all the societies in Scotland and the North of England to visit Strathaven over this weekend. At present we know of at least 20 visitors who will attend with several locomotives over these two days. During the weekend there will be several locomotives on track from late morning till dusk, unless the pesky weather cuts our day short.
Please note that NO PUBLIC RIDES will be given but all are welcome to view this gathering from the footpath.
